Peter Law is a member of Armadale Toastmasters.  On May 26 he won the WA International Public Speaking Contest at the State final of Toastmasters International.  In August he is off to the World Finals being held in Orlando, Florida.  The Armadale Toastmasters Club members are pleased and very proud that their President has won this prestigious award.

Peter’s winning speech was titled The Gift.  The gift we all have is time and he spoke of the way three people used their time in powerful ways that can inspire us all to examine the way we use our finite time in the only life we have.

The first was a 12 year old aboriginal girl, dying of an incurable disease in a Darwin hospital and being nursed by Peter’s daughter.  Given the choice by the Make a Wish Foundation for any wish, she chose to spend one more time camping with her parents out under the stars in her own country.

The second was Gene, one of Peter’s staff in the WA Defence Administration.  When he learned he had only weeks left to live from cancer, he spent the time writing notes to his wife and hiding them all around the house in unexpected places.  A year later she is still finding them, still being reminded of their happy lives together.

Third is the children of all parents, craving time.  “Dad, look at me.  Mum, come and play with me.”  Children want our time, need our attention, and we can make the time to give it to them.

Toastmasters is an International movement with almost 300,000 members all around the world.   It helps people who want to overcome their nervousness and become confident speakers in front of groups.  Armadale Toastmasters is one of 62 Clubs in District 17 in WA, one of the 86 Districts in the world.  Part of the annual convention in August is the final of the World Championship of Public Speaking.  He will have to win one of the 9 Semifinals to compete in the grand final.  We are confident he will.

Armadale Toastmasters meets every second Tuesday evening, from 6.30-8pm, at the Armadale Primary School in Carradine Road.  It is open to all people aged 18 and more.  Visitors are always welcome.  There will be a special Demonstration Meeting on Tuesday evening, July 17 where you can meet Peter and other club members to find out more about Toastmasters.  You can get more information about the Club from its website – – or by ringing Peter on 0408 936 623 or David on 0401 011 212.
